On Wednesday, December 18, our President & CEO, Kristina Cannon, was honored at the White House as one of just 14 Rural Innovators nationwide. Selected from hundreds of nominees, Kristina traveled to Washington, D.C., to join fellow changemakers at a special event celebrating the positive impact rural leaders are making in their communities across the country.
A Trailblazer for Rural Revitalization
Kristina’s nomination came from Maine USDA Rural Development State Director Rhiannon Hampson, who also attended the event in D.C. Reflecting on Kristina’s leadership, Hampson shared:
“Kristina Cannon is a trailblazer who has revolutionized the way Skowhegan approaches revitalization—through asset-based, community-led initiatives—leveraging outdoor recreation, local agriculture, and entrepreneurship as powerful tools for economic development. Kristina has built trust locally, regionally, and nationally by partnering and collaborating with dozens of organizations, state and federal government agencies, and businesses. Rural Development is proud to be a partner in this work.”
Kristina’s Reflection
Following the recognition, Kristina emphasized that the honor belongs to the community as much as to her personally:

“It’s humbling to be honored alongside highly accomplished colleagues from across the nation. In rural communities, it’s never just one person doing the work; this recognition belongs to our steadfast partners, supporters, volunteers, and my amazing team who are working tirelessly every day to ensure Skowhegan and Central Maine realize their ultimate potential as a thriving and resilient rural region.”

A Decade of Impact
Since stepping into her leadership role, Kristina has helped Main Street Skowhegan raise more than $10.3 million for revitalization initiatives that benefit both Skowhegan and the greater Central Maine region. These efforts span outdoor recreation, local agriculture, entrepreneurship, and workforce development—building a stronger, more vibrant rural economy.

Behind the Scenes at the White House
The event wasn’t all speeches and panels. Rural Innovators also enjoyed some lighter moments—like the chance to bowl at the White House bowling alley, a once-in-a-lifetime treat shared among new colleagues and friends.
