Paddling the Kennebec River (for Beginners)

The Kennebec River is one of Maine’s most iconic waterways, winding through forests, farms, and charming towns—including the heart of Skowhegan. For beginners, paddling the river can seem intimidating, but with a little preparation, it’s an unforgettable way to connect with nature, enjoy the outdoors, and see the region from a fresh perspective.

Why Paddle the Kennebec in Skowhegan?

Skowhegan offers a mix of Class II whitewater, followed by calm stretches and scenic views, making it ideal for first-time paddlers. Along the river, you’ll spot wildlife, historic landmarks, and even opportunities to stop at local parks for a picnic or rest. Plus, paddling is a low-impact activity that’s accessible to almost anyone, whether you’re in a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard.

Choosing Your Watercraft

For beginners, the two most popular options are:

  • Kayaks – Great for solo paddlers and easy to maneuver. Sit-on-top kayaks are especially beginner-friendly and less likely to tip.
  • Canoes – Ideal for groups or families. Canoes offer more space for gear, snacks, or even a small cooler.

While stand-up paddleboards are also growing in popularity along the Kennebec, they require a bit more balance and core strength. So we don’t recommend SUP for beginners.

Safety Tips for First-Time Paddlers

Even on calm waters, safety is key:

  1. Wear a Type III or Type IV Lifejacket – Always. Make sure it fits properly.
  2. Check the weather – Avoid strong winds or storms.
  3. Start small – Choose shorter routes before attempting longer stretches.
  4. Bring essentials – Water, sunscreen, a hat, and a dry bag for valuables.
  5. Know the river – Pay attention to currents, bridges, and potential obstacles.

Best Paddles for Beginners

  1. Cleaver Landing / Wesserunsett Stream Out-and-Back: A scenic stretch near downtown Skowhegan perfect for a 1–2 hour paddle. Put-in at Cleaver Landing and paddle downstream along the river-left shore of the Kennebec River toward Wesserunsett Stream. Travel upstream on Wesserunsett Stream. Turn around and take-out at Cleaver Landing.
  2. Cleaver Landing in Skowhegan to Hinckley Boat Launch in Fairfield: A longer route for those ready to spend a half-day on the water. This stretch features gentle currents and beautiful riverside scenery.
  3. The Skowhegan Gorge or Big Eddy to Cleaver Landing: If you are up for an adventure, you can join Skowhegan Outdoors on one of their trips down the Skowhegan Gorge where you can navigate Class II whitewater and pass underneath the iconic walking bridge. If you want to skip the whitewater, you can put-in at the end of the Debe River Trail and paddle through the “Big Eddy” visible from Route 2 through some light current to Cleaver Landing. 45 minute – 1 hour paddle.

Making the Most of Your Paddle Adventure

  • Start early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures.
  • Bring a camera or phone in a waterproof case—you’ll want to capture the river’s beauty.
  • Consider paddling with a friend or joining a local paddling group for guidance and support.
  • Keep an eye out for wildlife like herons, eagles, and river otters.

Insider Tip

Wesserunsett Stream is one of the best hidden gems in Skowhegan. Multiple times over the summer, we take kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and pack rafts from Cleaver Boat Landing down Wesserunsett Stream. We see beavers, otters, eagles, and large schools of fish. There is plenty of parking at the Cleaver Boat Landing. From there you can paddle towards the left and go down Wesserunsett Stream as far as you’d like. Turn around at your leisure and enjoy the paddle back. This flat water paddle is perfect for beginners looking for an easy, relaxing, and scenic trip.
