For me, Skowhegan has always been the place to go. Growing up just down the road in Cornville, trips into town meant getting something good to eat, exploring local shops, or meeting up with friends. Now, as one of the newest members of the Skowhegan Outdoors team, I’m excited to help others discover the same sense of place—and the incredible outdoor experiences Maine has to offer.
Here’s what a perfect day in Skowhegan looks like from my point of view.
Start with a Big Breakfast
Every good day starts with a solid breakfast, so my first stop would have to be Alice’s Restaurant. Known for its hearty portions and classic diner feel, it’s the kind of place where you can settle in for a big breakfast before heading out for the day.
My go-to order is either the corned beef hash or the S.O.S.—both classic diner breakfasts that will keep you fueled for whatever the day brings.

Get Outside
If the weather is sunny, I’m working off that breakfast by heading straight for the water. Spending time on the Kennebec River—whether canoeing or cruising along on my parents’ pontoon boat—is one of my favorite ways to enjoy a summer day in Skowhegan.
If the weather is nasty and I’m stuck on land, a hike through Coburn Woods Trails is another go-to. The trails offer a peaceful way to get outside, stretch your legs, and enjoy the woods just minutes from downtown.
A Downtown Stroll
On cooler or overcast days, I’ll move the party to Water Street. Skowhegan’s walkable main streets make it easy to spend an afternoon exploring local shops and antique stores.
Of course, no stroll is complete without a stop at The Bankery for a scone and a good cup of coffee.
Lunch: A Local Classic
For lunch, I’m heading up the hill to Al’s Pizza. My pick? The legendary Garbage Can sandwich—also known as the Dagwood. Stacked high with meats and toppings, it’s a Skowhegan classic and more than enough fuel for the rest of the day.
End the Day with Food, Music, and Friends
To wrap things up, my perfect evening includes dinner and a drink at the Skowhegan Biergarten. If the timing is right, there might even be live music playing—making it the perfect place to relax after a full day around town.

Aiden Belanger grew up in nearby Cornville, where much of his time outdoors was spent right in his own backyard. Now a member of the Skowhegan Outdoors team, he’s excited to help others discover everything the region has to offer—from rivers and trails to the simple joy of spending time outside. And if his perfect day is any indication, Skowhegan is a pretty good place to start.
